The NY-based DJ quartet of Rob Swift, Roc Raida, Total Eclipse and Mista Sinista, collectively known as the X-Ecutioners, execute all opponents with the wizardry found within Built From Scratch. In fact, the X-Ecutioners successfully take hip-hop back to its essence.

Their combination of top-notch scratching, street respectable featured rappers (M.O.P, Biz Markie, Pharoahe Monch, Kool G Rap, Xzibit, etc), and beatboxer Kenny Mummahed help make this album deserving of acclaim. The diversified listening selection also includes jungle-esk tracks like the hot 'Play That Beat', and alternative rap on the Linkin Park influenced 'It's Goin Down.'

The very amusing 'Hip Hop Awards (Skit)' pokes fun at the current state of hip-hop, isolating four distinctly weak sub-genres of hip-hop. 'X-ecutioners (Theme) Song' features Dan The Automator and satisfies with its aural treats.

X-Ecutioners successfully bridge the gap between turtabalism, true hip-hop and the mainstream fan base. This album is a necessity for any true hip-hop fan's collection. At a time when hip-hop seems to be suffering from devolution, it's nice to hear an album that remains true to its roots.
