Master T's latest compilation album is one for the mainstream hip-hop heads. Urban Vibes Volume One features a large number of popular second-rate singles as well as a few top-notch singles, such as Missy Elliott's 'Work It' and Cam'ron's 'Hey Ma'. Style-wise Urban Vibes Volume One ranges from the Clipse's hard-hitting 'Grindin' to pop dancehall on Beenie Man's 'Feel It Boy' to pop hip-hop on Ja Rule & Ashanti's 'Down 4 U.' Master T obviously helps rep the Canadian hip-hop scene with this release as it features Swollen Members energetic 'Steppin Thru,' as well as input from Jully Black, Kardinal, Trey, Saukrates, Red 1 and Solitair. The compilation is aimed at bringing diversity rather than a strict party vibe, as LL Cool J's 'Love You Better' and Slum Village's 'Tainted' slow things down a bit. However it also keeps the party bumpin with the upbeat 'Gimme The Light (remix)' by Sean Paul, Eminem's annoyingly overplayed 'Without You,' Fabolous' 'This Is My Party' and one of my favorite's with NERD's 'Lapdance.' I have to admit Urban Vibes Volume One was quite deceiving. The lineup wasn't amazing, but it was still impressive. The downfall was that the album featured only radio edited versions of the songs, so tracks like 'Grindin' sounded more like "fill-in-the-blank" themes than the original version. Additionally, Universal's new 'Copy Controlled' protection was placed on this album, thus making it impossible to play on my computer. Nonetheless, if you're looking for a clean compilation album of fluffy mainstream hip-hop to bump at high school dances or on the radio, then this album is for you.
