The Underground Kings (UGK) gained notoriety for their part in Jay-Z's hit "Big Pimpin." However, the duo of Bun B and Pimp C have been doing their southern gangsta rap thing for more than a decade. In fact two of their albums have even reached the #2 position on Billboard's 'Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums' charts. After five releases, they decided it was time to release their greatest hits album. UGK yield a laid-back gangsta sound similar to a watered down combination of Three Six Mafia, Too Short and Scarface. For the most part, I found their style boring and unappealing. Of course with it being their greatest hits, some songs had to stand out. The beat on 'Good Stuff' combined with its smooth catchy chorus makes this song UGK's true gem. The thick bass line on 'I Left it Wet For You' also impresses. UGK manage to pull out some catchy choruses, but their slow laid-back delivery left something to be desired. If you like laid-back southern gangsta rap, then you might want to check out Best of Underground Kings, otherwise your money is better spent elsewhere.
