Every so often I find myself falling deeper and deeper into the monotony of the current state of hip-hop music. Fortunately, there has always been an outstanding album come along that allows me to weather the storm. In the past, albums that have pulled me out of the storm include Dead Prez's Lets Get Free, Dr. Dre's Chronic 2001 and Sean One's I Live In New Brunswick. This time my deliverance comes at the hands of Spek.

Spek's decision to quit the Dream Warriors and move to Europe to pursue a solo career has certainly paid off. With a unique style that Spek described to me as "De La Soul meets the Beatles," you won't find too many hardcore rap fans picking this album up. I, however, couldn't get enough of Spek's funk induced folkish stylings on Don't Sweat the Small Stuff. In fact, the upbeat and uplifting instrumentals, when coupled with Spek's positive vibe, make for a truly distinctive feel-good sound.

The second single, 'Smell The Coffee,' is searingly addictive. I've had the chorus stuck in my head ever since I started listening to the album. Watch out for the video, it's bound to do some damage. The catchy first single, 'I'm a Hippie,' has generated mixed reviews in the UK due to its similarity to a Primal Scream groove. Other impressive songs include the upbeat 'Back Home' and the mellow and laid-back 'All Yours.'

Admittedly, Spek is not the greatest emcee, but this works to his advantage on this album. His slightly nasal delivery and laid-back stance complement the album like Noah does his Ark. If you're looking to take in something new that's upbeat, conscious, and filled with positivity, then you'd better cop this album.
