If Second Front's debut album is truly the sound of progress, then I'm down to take some steps forward. The Halifax foursome of EMC, Andrew Gordon, Sentient and DP use their underground production skills to mold an album layered with thought-provoking political rhymes. Although not the most skilled emcees, their message masks any abilities they lack. They waste no time jumping into the politics on the first track, 'So Go Home,' by challenging Bush's choice to go to war with Iraq. The most stirring track is 'Revolutionary,' as its simple statements sting with truth: "some children grow up, abstaining from play, a child in Haiti is working 14 hour days" & "I can't see outside the box cause it's a Nintendo game cube." The horn on 'Final Notice' kept my ears satisfied with a theme centered on the materialistic tendencies of the masses. The belly-dancing esque cymbals on 'It's Just a Game' and various vocal samples are the song's staples. It discusses the world's economy, identifying that the majority of the world's wealth resides in the hands of a few. The laid-back piano on 'Terrorist' creates a calming contrast to the in-your-face music and lyrics. Although The Sound of Progress might seem short, weighing in with nine songs and two instrumental tracks, its 47 minutes prove otherwise. In fact, one can quickly become entangled in Second Front's mesh of beats, EMC's beatboxing and lyrics with a purposeful message. The Sound of Progress presents a unique diversity allowing for an enjoyably relaxing listen for those looking to chill out, or an upbeat mind-provoking listen for those looking to have their political views challenged. www.brockwayent.com(Originally posted on HipHopCanada.com) This review was written Feb 4th 2004 Trizoys Album Reviews > Home |
