For some people the word 'sophomore' elicits feelings of nervousness and anxiety. For Jurassic 5, it means starting from scratch, seizing the moment and captivating the world.
Power In Numbers is the second full-length album from the underground meets mainstream crew of Jurassic 5. Their unique style is reminiscent of the "throwback era in hip-hop, when the only thing that seemed to matter was the music and having fun." In fact, group DJs Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark must have plundered and pillaged for the barrage of samples found in the sonically satisfying instrumentation they provide.
As well, the vocal diversity of Jurassic 5's MCs, Chali 2na, Zaakir (Soup), Akil and Marc 7, makes for a fresh listen filled with contrast. They tell stories on the captivating 'Remember His Name' and provide food for thought on tracks like 'Thin Line,' where, with the help of Nelly Furtado, they explain the complexities and "thin line" between friendships and relationships. 'Freedom' speaks politics and life choices while enchanting the listener with a catchy sample. 'Break' is an old-school feel-good track. The last track, 'Acetate Prophets,' is simply amazing as its vocal-free state allows the DJs Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark to shine and display their sampling skills.
It's no surprise that Power In Numbers is currently number one on the Canadian campus charts. Jurassic 5 is able to redefine their art, provide compelling lyrical content and sample their way to a diversely stimulating sound. This album is worth picking up, but don't expect any club anthems or thugged out bangers.
