Ranking 4.5/5

Few emcees are truly able to embrace all the elements of hip-hop, stay down-to-earth, knowledgeable, true to them self, while managing to forge their own distinct path in hip-hop. More Or Les is much more than your typical emcee/DJ/beatboxer and demonstrates this on I Only Stop For The Red Ants.

Based out of Toronto, you might recognize More Or Les as the DJ at 'In Divine Style' every Thursday at The Hooch, or from his hilarious video for the anthem-like 'A Little Too Much Weed.' It's apparent he's intent on walking his own walk with his slogan "Hip Hop The Wrongway", and reiterated on 'UnderWater' with the line, "Your shit is underground. My shit is underwater." Fortunately the beats at the hand of Dorc provide some truly impressive sounds, making his hip-hop outlook seem near genius.

At a time, when I've been struggling to find truly impressive standout songs, More Or Les provides three. Backed by a funky beat, the chorus for "LEStalk" urges emcees to discover their passion for this indie rapper. "Seriously!" is an energetic hype song, featuring some impressive breath control and word play, but at times it is difficult to decipher the words. "A Little Too Much Weed" is the album's staple as it takes an often-used topic, but flips it into an acceptably comedic ode to weed. "Comedy" calls out emcees for things like writing rhymes with content based on the stereotypes of the hip-hop genre, and passing off written rhymes as freestyles.

On I Only Stop For The Red Ants, More Or Les is impressive. Backed by beats by Dorc, he becomes a two-man wrecking crew. He's at times witty; at times conscious; and fortunately takes himself a bit less seriously than most, which works heavily to his advantage. Take a listen if you get a chance, you won't regret it.
