'Ego Trip's: The Big Playback' is indeed a big playback of some true old skool cuts. This twelve track compilation features only one recognizable artist, Marley Marl. However, as you give each track a listen, you'll definitely recognize cuts that have been sampled by current rap artists such as Wu Tang Clan, Run DMC, Dr Dre, Notorious B.I.G. and so on. With each song having been released prior to 1990, the flavor is funky fresh. There's no gangsta rap, just piles and piles of DJ scratches, wild samples and respectable lyrics.
"Marley Marl Scratch" (1985) by Marley Marl and MC Shan, has a beat virtually identical to Run DMC's, "Sucker MC's." There's some great scratching to be heard on this track. "Get Down Grandmaster" (1988) by Grandmaster Caz has an irresistible bass beat, impressive lyrics and samples from Kool & The Gang's "Get Down Tonight."
'The Big Playback' is an impressive compilation of some true old skool underground tracks. Although most of the tracks were produced by nobody artists, still each song had feel-good hip hop appeal. This trip down memory lane is worth your money if you enjoy old skool rap in the slightest. It provides good variety and recognizable cuts and scratches.
