Back in 1997, I fell in love with Camp Lo's infectious 'Black Nostaljack.' Since then, the Bronx duo of Emerald Geechie Suede and Sonny Cheba had virtually disappeared leaving me to fear they might never be more than a one album wonder (1997's Uptown Saturday Night). Fortunately they've returned with an impressive sophomore album entitled Let's Do It Again.
Camp Lo's funk tinged beats at the hands of Ski make for a fun and at times soulful listen. Camp Lo start out hard on the first song, 'Gotcha,' a Mobb Deep-esque theme that is soon forgotten upon hearing the uplifting chorus of "love the world" on the title track. The true fun begins on the funky old skool joint 'Soul Train.' The oriental feel of 'China Soul' makes for a refreshing taste of originality. The only featured artist, Handsome, makes for a nice complement to Camp Lo's flow on 'Turbo Ozone.'
Let's Do It Again provides a satisfying funk-tinged listen. Although Camp Lo's two emcees don't drop hot verses, their style complements the album's overall feel quite well. Let's Do It Again isn't the classic their debut was, but manages to put them back on the map.
